Friends, I am only halfway through Jacob's Ladder.  I've got to pick up the pace to be ready by Friday.

Wondering at this point:  did MKR try cooter and possum in order to write about how delicious they were?  I'm not sure I could do that for art!

  1. She had the ability to describe sights, sounds, smells, and tastes with such precision, I would not be surprised if she had indeed tried eating tidbits of those 'varmints'. On the other hand, she may have written about what she heard from her Cracker friends!
Jacob's Ladder is a long short story but is so rich in visceral detail that one must take time and enjoy every picture she paints in the imagination.

  2. I finished it today. Liked much more than the little vinettes from last week.

  3. Her cookbook, Cross Creek Cookery, includes several recipes for coot, including coot liver & gizzard pilau (she says to pronounce this "pur-loo"), coot surprise & soft shell cooter. There are no recipes for Opossum our possum. I'll bring the cook book on Friday.
